Statement

I use traditional materials to make nontraditional paintings. The work is often a repetition of circular forms that puzzle into one another, either through piercing holes or built-up layers that form a skin-like barrier. Canvas peels back to reveal something of the surface- or things hidden from view. My use of materials speaks to impulsivity as well as care, where tedious stitching meets indiscriminate composition. Concealment, illusion, and veneer are used to embody a sense of wonder or mystery. This covertness instills a relentless desire to discover what lies behind the curtain. The work strives to lay out the complexity and interconnectedness of things; the intrigue of a person, the beauty in a flaw, and things unable to be witnessed.
